What is Counselling?
"The overall aim of counselling is to provide an opportunity for the client to work
towards living in a more satisfying and resourceful way. The term 'counselling'
includes work with individuals, pairs or groups of people often, but not always,
referred to as 'clients'. The objectives of particular counselling relationships will
vary according to the client's needs. Counselling may be concerned with
developmental issues, addressing and resolving specific problems, making
decisions, coping with crisis, developing personal insight and knowledge, working
through feelings of inner conflict or improving relationships with others. The
counsellor's role is to facilitate the client's work in ways which respect the client's
values, personal resources and capacity for self-determination" (British
Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Code of Ethics & Practice)
Confidentiality is an important feature of the counselling service and your
counsellor will explain this to you in the first session. It is a professional
requirement that your counsellor receives supervision but you will not be identified
to the supervisor. Professional counselling is an important way of ensuring that a
competent professional service is provided.
What does Psychodynamic Counselling mean?
This approach recognizes the significance of past experiences in relation to what is
going on in the present and the place of repeating patterns. In exploring the
issues and concerns you bring to counselling it is important to consider the origins
of those problems, the feelings and difficulties they are evoking in the present,
and realistic options or changes for the future.
The issues you bring will be considered in the context of your personal
circumstances and you will be seen as a whole person and in the context of your relationships with others. In psychodynamic counselling the relationship
between counsellor and client is a crucial aspect of the work, and it is important
that both you and your counsellor feel you can work together.
The following are some of the reasons that people come to counselling and some clients simply come because they want to discover more fulfilling and rewarding ways of living.
- Relationship difficulties: work related; personal; family
- Bereavement and loss
- Depression, stress, anxiety, feelings of panic
- Coming to terms with a traumatic event
- Sexual identity issues
- Feeling of loneliness, failure, or sadness
- Problems with anger
- Problems with alcohol, addictions or eating disorders
- Issues of physical, emotional or sexual abuse,
- Harassment or bullying
- Pervading feelings of dissatisfaction
How long is a session? Sessions take place weekly and last 50 minutes.
What is the fee? For individuals the fee is £40 per session and for Couples £45
per session.
Why do we charge? TECC receives no funding or financial backing and a fee is
necessary to cover our overheads and to ensure that a professional service is
provided.
What will be expected of me? Counselling can be hard work for the client and
you should be prepared to make a commitment to the process if you expect to
make a difference in your life.
What can I expect from my counsellor? Your counsellor will not give you
advice or judge you, and is highly trained to be alongside you as an objective,
compassionate and challenging fellow-traveller during this time of exploration.
How long does counselling last? Some people may find that a few sessions
are sufficient to help them resolve a particular difficulty. For others, who realize
their problems are more 'deep seated', a longer period of work may be beneficial.
The first session is when you can explore with your counsellor your own particular
needs.
Ending counselling You are free to end counselling at any time but it is
important to discuss this with your counsellor and explain the reasons for wishing
to end. There is no limit to the number of sessions we offer a client, but if the
counsellor feels that your work has come to an end or that it should continue with
another professional, she will tell you why she feels this to be the case. She will
give you any information you need to access further help if that is what you wish.
